Early 20 Century Turkish Oushak Carpet
Heriz was a popular source for Oushak designers and this ivory carpet in the all-over Harshang design was adapted from Bakshayesh-type Heriz carpets of the later 19th century. The well-abrashed slate blue main border is more in the eccentric Oushak style with rough-edged palmettes and squiggly stems. The pattern is balanced in all four directions and the large palmettes are especially vigorous for this circa 1900 western Anatolian carpet.
