Early 20th Century N. Indian Lahore Carpet with Garrus Design
Indian weavers are adept at interpreting any existing design into original formats. Here the split arabesque Garrus Bijar pattern on dark blue has been precisely expanded into a large, square format carpet. An ivory border of colourful open palmettes makes a consistent frame. The general tonality is slightly more mellow than the original, but the format is never found in Bijar carpets. The weave is close and the pile is compact.
