The colour scheme of this giant rug is rich and complex, with a wine red field and royal blue major border. Allover designs were a Kerman specialty and no other area can match the complexity and innovation in the best rugs from this southeastern Persian city. Lancet leaves, various styles of palmettes and untold minor devices ornament the field and inspire the borders. This enormous carpet was clearly a commissioned order rasther than woven for a dealer’s stock. It is in excellent condition with a fine, regular weave.
