19th Century Persian Kerman Lavar Carpet
As with many large Lavar grade Kermans from the later 19th century, this rug has an allover pattern, here a clever adaptation of the harshang (crab) pattern on a navy ground. Besides the usual border arrangement with a larger central stripe with vines and palmettes, there is an unusual ivory band within the field with projections, cartouches and other elements. This carpet embodies the creative fantasies of Kerman designers and weavers.
