DescriptionHeriz - SilkFrom the first quarter of the 19th century until the beginning of the 20th century, a select group of silk pile, silk foundation rugs was woven in the Heriz area in northwest Iran. More flexible in handle than silk Tabriz rugs, they have brighter colors and more idiosyneratic drawing often related to their coarser woolen cousins, weaves vary. But very fine examples count 500 knots per square inch. As rustic products they share a playfulness and naiveté foreign to their factory-made contemporaries from Tabriz. Sizes run from scatters up to 12 x 18 and designs are diverse. Often found in excellent condition, they are deservedly quite pricey. | |
