Early 20th Century Donegal Arts & Crafts Carpet Designed by Gavin Morton
Designed by Gavin Morton.
Clearly inspired by contemporaneous Turkish Oushak weaving, this well-coloured antique Donegal carpet presents a unidirectional ragged palmette, small flower and two-level angular vine pattern on a vivid red field. The dark blue border also shows oriental carpet influence in the palmette and small flower array pattern. Gavin Morton initiated Donegal weaving and this exceptionally large carpet is one of the best examples. The general pattern also appears on smaller carpets. Donegal wove runners, but not smaller scatters. Production continued into the 1950’s, but this splendid example shows the workshop at the height of its powers.
