Mid-18th Century English Axminster Carpet
The unusual camel field of this period Axminster carpet appears behind the in and out palmette, leaf and vine pattern adapted from virtually contemporary Indian Mughal carpets. The palmette and lancet leaf ivory border has the same inspiration. The colour palette is purely Western, however. This carpet could have been woven during the lifetime of the Axminster-Wilton founder Thomas Whitty.
