Early 19th Century French Charles X Period Aubusson Carpet
Although this extraordinary rug dates from the French Charles X period, it is far from the neo-classical and restrained look of most pieces of the period. An eight-lobe laurel branch edged medallion rides over the dark red-brown volute filled field and is positioned by four corner jardinières filled with verdant bouquets. Further laurel arcs edge the elaborate border. The complex design points forward to the elaboration of the Second Empire carpets.
