The Victorian period (Napoleon II- Second Empire) in France saw intense elaboration of traditional medallion patterns, as on this fine example with a huge ivory cruciform enclosing a floral bouquet. Thick vines writhe around the field ,and irregular ivory cartouches and acanthus escutcheons decorate the sides and corners, respectively.
